No electric start as Giacomo Agostini bump starts the 1969 Trident
I picked up one of the first Tridents to come into New Zealand from the Triumph importer W . Whites in Auckland . I must say I was impressed at the time . I was familiar with Triumph twins like the Bonneville and Trophy , but the threecylinder powerplant was something different . At 212kg , the Trident was heavier than the 183kg T120 Bonnie , but produced almost 60bhp compared with the 46bhp of the Bonneville , and the 201km / h top speed of the Trident was 24km / h quicker than the Bonneville . To put these speeds into perspective , 200km / h might not sound very fast by today ’ s standards , but it is twice the open road speed limit , and for those of you who remember the condition of New Zealand roads in 1969 compared with today , that is very fast .
