AM I INSURED ? So . To the illegitimate ones riding sans a licence , a few questions . Are you still under the delusion that you are insured while riding on the road ? Do you think your life insurance will come to your family ’ s aid if the shit hits the fan ? Do you know that you now attract demerit points like a drunk to an open brewery ? And those points can see your licence to drive or ride anything put on ice . You need to understand a few things about how riding unlicenced is deemed by not just the police . It is deemed as deliberately engaging in an illegal activity . So what ? Here ’ s the sucker punch . It gives an out-door to companies you are paying premiums to , in the vain hope that your arse is covered when it turns to custard . Call your insurance companies , both vehicle and life and try to get reassurance that you are , in fact , covered while riding . Some may produce such reassurances , but others sure as Hell will not . Getting your licence is way more of a challenge than it once was , so simply being able to ride a bike will no longer suffice . You need traffic management skills and a raft of such new-age things are scored on the nearly one-hour ride ( for your Restricted ). If you don ’ t know what is needed , you could be MotoGP-good and still doomed to fail miserably , so you ’ ll need to get in touch with an NZTA licencing provider to navigate a course through . It is easy enough with the training and information and we can guide you through such troubles . You might even learn a whole bunch of stuff you didn ’ t know you never knew as a bonus . As a rider who has held a motorcycle licence since 1980 , no , I would not have passed the modern assessment now if I simply bowled up on a bike and flew by the seat of my pants . It is not hugely difficult to pass , once you know what is required , but it certainly is easy to fail . So , time to get legal and legit .
