1929 Scott Flying Squirrrel 600

I recently found a catalogue from a 2010 Webb ’ s auction ‘ Important vintage & collectable motorcycles ’ which I remember going to . In the catalogue is a quote from Ernest Hemingway , “ There are only three sports ; mountain climbing , bullfighting , and motor racing . All the rest are merely games ”. The quote goes well when followed by some of the most charismatic racing motorcycles of all time . The list includes a 1931 Sunbeam Model 90 , 1934 Scott Isle of Man Replica , 1949 AJS 7R 350 , 1952 Ray Petty Manx Norton 350 long stroke , 1968 Triton T140 , 1969 Benelli 250 / 4 , 1974 Norton John Player Special , and 1974 Laverda . The collection was not all racing machines , although I ’ m sure many others in the catalogue would have been raced in a variety of different situations and events .

The line-up was impressive . In all there were fifty-nine bikes for sale at the auction , from a 1917 Harley-Davidson Model J , to a 2002 Harley-Davidson Electra Guide Ultra Classic . There were eight Harleys in the lineup . In the pre-World War Two models were a 1921 Triumph 550 Model S , a 1924 AJS Sports Deluxe 350 , a 1925 Indian Prince 350 , a 1929 BSA Sloper DeLuxe 500 , and a Scott Flying Squirrel 600 . Into the 1930s and an Ariel Red Hunter , a 1937 Velocette KSS , and a Triumph Tiger 80 . The post War models begin with 1947 Indian Chief , followed by a 1949 Ariel Square Four . In the 1950s a 1953 Triumph Speed Twin , BMW R25 with outfit , and Indian Chief Road Master . Some of the iconic British machines of the 50s and 1960s came next , a 1956 BSA Bantam 125 . 1956 Norton Dominator 650 , 1957 250
