SOUTHERN SCOOTER CHALLENGE RETURNS
The deep south will ring with the sound of small capacity engines once again this September as the bi-annual Southern Scooter Challenge makes its return . For the seventh running since the inaugural event in 2010 , this year ’ s Challenge will see 150 riders and their sub-50cc scooters take on a 220km ride from Bluff through to Queenstown . The Challenge is in no way a race – it ’ s an awareness-raising and fundraising event for the survivors , families of those with cancer and those committed to making a difference . This year the organisers have announced that all funds raised will be staying in The South and supporting The Southland Charity Hospital and Hospice Southland .
As the name implies , the Southern Scooter Challenge is not for the fainthearted , and is meant to be a challenge for both bike and rider . Far from a relaxing day out , it is designed to be the coldest , longest , hardest , most gruelling and uncomfortable test of endurance on a city scooter to raise money and awareness for charity . Riders participate as individuals or as a team , with many of them dressing up and getting right into the spirit of the day . The 2021 event already has a full roster of riders taking part with the next scheduled Southern Scooter Challenge set to take place in 2023 .
