during the NZ winter months, collecting
and looking for bits and pieces of classic
race models. I can tell many stories about
people attempting to restore motorcycles in
filthy and junkie little sheds, where they had
no idea what they were doing. From these
sources I bought boxes of bits which the
owners had no idea what they were. But I did,
and at a good price.
After getting started on my own restoration
programme I met another Wanganui retiree,
Peter Quilter, who was also keen to work on
classic motorcycle restorations, and knew
what he was doing. We joined forces and
worked together for fifteen years. During my
business years I had learnt there were a great
number of skilled people in Wanganui, so
it hasn’t been difficult to get much unusual
mechanical and fabrication work done
here. You may have met Steve Roberts. I
also introduced him to Ken McIntosh when
Ken was first beginning to be involved with
Manx Nortons. I think Steve has now built
somewhere around two hundred Manx
Norton petrol tanks.
