Those two iconic British classic bikes, and
two ground breaking Japanese models
make up the first four in the 2000 line
up. The rest of the winners included the
Honda C100, Norton Commando, Honda
CBX6 1000, Suzuki 1100 Katana, Honda
Dream, and Yamaha RD350/400. Just ten
classic machines representing the pick of
the bunch chosen by readers and editors
of motorcycle journals around the world
in 2000. There were others of course, like
the Hesketh V1000 and Scott 600 Flying
Squirrel. Not perhaps as well known or remembered as the others, but worthy
of a place in a representative collection
of classic bikes of the first 100-years of
motorcycling.
Personally I would have found a place for a
Vincent Black Lightening, a 1963 Velocette
Thruxton, a 1976 BMW R90S, a 1994 Ducati
916 and, yes indeed, a 1994 Britten, but
that’s a race bike, so I would have to throw
in a 1962 Norton Manx and a 1962 Matchless
G50, two race bikes that did much to keep
the British tradition of single cylinder race
bikes alive.
So, if you have a favourite, whether it is
in the previous line up, or you feel it was
missed out twenty years ago, let us know
and it could be included in the Kiwi Rider classic hit parade for 2020. Send your
selection by email to [email protected]
or by post to Classics, Kiwi Rider Magazine,
PO Box 299, Kumeu 0841, Auckland.
