I know it can sound like a cliché and often overused phrase to call the kitchen the heart of the home but let ’ s call it as it is . It is where we spend the most time as a family whether we are sipping on a cup of coffee while getting ready for our day or preparing a family meal . In our home , it ’ s where we cook , bake , laugh , do arts and crafts , homework , and most importantly where we bond as a family .
Over the years , I ’ ve designed many kitchens . What we considered on-trend for finishes ten years ago may no longer be in style but one trend that has stood the test of time is entertaining kitchens . ( See kitchen trends starting on page 12 ) Recently our friends invited us for dinner to show us their newly renovated kitchen . It was stunning ! I loved the oversized island that went on for days . It was the perfect spot for everyone to chat while prepping the meal for the sit down dinner . ( For meal ideas , see this issue ’ s recipes starting on page 68 ) Their kitchen embraced the trend that depicts how we no longer want to cook behind closed doors . Kitchens are open and airy with lots of emphasis on proper use of space so that you can do what you do best and let your kitchen complement your daily routine and cooking style . Entertaining kitchens are not a trend , they are a way of life and won ’ t be going away any time soon .
When it comes to kitchen design , I ’ m a sucker for a good makeover ! I live for them ! I had the opportunity to tour Jacklynn Little ’ s beautiful kitchen for the Marc and Mandy Show ( See Jacklynn Little ’ s kitchen on page 18 ) and I have to say I love how she took her existing kitchen to a whole new level with a few simple modifications . It ’ s just to show how a little paint and splurging on a finish or two can completely transform a space . It has everything in Chef Daniel ’ s recipe for a good kitchen design - fun , food and life .
