Edible Containers

The focus for Food Technology this year is Edible Containers. The purpose of this came from the fact that human beings are becoming lazier by the minute. Often when people go on picnics or visits to the park, they buy pastic cups, forks, plates, knives etc…… When they go, they leave behind all of their rubbish and it ends up in the ocean, causing sea life to become threatened and/or extinct - all thanks to our careless behaviour for the environment. So, that is why we have edible containers as the theme/focus for this year. Mrs Grant has happily shared some of her yummy recipes with us:

SUSHI

Ingredients:

Sushi Rice:

1 C shortgrained (uncooked) rice

2 1/3 C water

Sushi Vinegar:

1/3 C white vinegar

2 T sugar

1 t salt

Method:

1. Combine the vinegar, sugar and salt, simmer briefly to dissolve. Cool.

2. Place the rice and water in a saucepan. Bring these to the boil, stir once then cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the rice is cooked.

3. Tip rice into a shallow dish and fan to cool. Cut the rice as you do this, to allow the steam to escape.

4. Add the sushi vinegar using 1t per cup of cooked rice and continue cutting to combine these. Do not stir.

Sushi Ingredients:

Sheets of nori (dried seaweed sheets)

Wasabi (Japanese Horseradish)

Fillings of your choice that may include: crab, salmon, chicken, pickled ginger, omelet, capsicum, cucumber, carrot and avocado.

Japanese soy sauce.

Method:

1. Lay a sushi mat on the bench. It may be covered with a sheet of cling wrap.

2. Lay a nori sheet on top with the rough side up.

3. Prepare the fillings by cutting into strips.

4. Spread the rice over the sheet using wet hands. Leave a clear 1cm strip of nori at the far end.

5. Arrange chosen fillings along the closest edge and gently roll the sushi up. Make sure the bare strip seals the roll well.

6. Use a sharp knife to cut into pieces and serve with pickled ginger, wasabi and soy sauce for dipping.
