By Ben Magee

In September students from Kamo Intermediate will go to AIMS Games once again. We hear lots about it, but what do we really know about it? I decided to interview Mr Epskamp, head of AIMS Games at Kamo Intermediate, to find out and here’s what he had to say:

Q: What does AIMS stands for?

A: Association of Intermediate and Middle Schools

Q: What different sports are there at AIMS Games?

A: Hockey, Badminton, Basketball, BMX Racing, Canoe Slalom, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Gym Sports, Hockey 6-aside, Indoor Bowls, Multi Sport, Netball, Peformance Groups, Rugby Sevens, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Water Polo, Yachting.

Q: When was AIMS founded and how long has KIS been going for?

A: AIMS was founded in 2005. Kamo Intermediate have been sending students to compete since 2009.

Q: It is expensive to go to AIMS, and is it worth the money?

A: Yes, kids get a great experience by going.

Q: Has it always been held in Tauranga?

A: Yes

Q: Why is AIMS Games held in Tauranga?

A: Because Tauranga Intermediate started it off and it used to be a local competition - now it’s national, and some Island schools also come to New Zealand to attend.

Q: How many people participate?

A: 9,300 - this year will be the most so far.

Q: How many schools participate?

A: 280

Q: Do people have to qualify or can you just pay the money and go?

A: In some events you have to qualify.

Q: Have you seen anyone from AIMS go on to represent their country?

A: Yes, many have.
