Changed days
Sport is becoming a bigger and more important part of Wykehamical life,
with more boys playing more sports, for longer, and to a better standard
than ever before.
Back in the late 1960s when the existing
Physical Education Centre (PEC) was built,
Win Coll was home to around 550 boys, had
just four football teams and four cricket teams,
and offered a relatively meagre selection
of sports.
Today, we welcome 700 boys through our doors,
field 21 football teams against Eton on a single
afternoon and offer a diverse programme of
nearly 30 sports to choose from.
All of which place insurmountable demands
on our ageing PEC.
“I loved my time playing sport
at Winchester, even though the
sports’ facilities of the School in
the 1960s were pretty primitive.
The Sports Hall of the 1970s
was a big step forward at the
time; but it is clear to me that
the School now needs to take
another major step and the
new plans look very exciting.”
