Meet Emma
Emma is one of the
countless orphans from
Africa’s burgeoning
bushmeat trade — the
illegal hunting of wild
animals and the sale
of their meat. When a
hunter killed her family,
he brought her to a logging camp where she was
rescued and flown to Limbe Wildlife Centre, a
PASA member organization.
Emma weighed six pounds and refused to eat or
drink. She needed immediate medical treatment
and around-the-clock care from Limbe’s dedicated
staff. Since gorillas typically stay with their mothers
for five to six years in the wild, Emma received care
from a human caregiver.
Now 20, Emma has grown up to be a sweet, quiet
and curious gorilla but lacks survival skills and
will probably need to spend her entire life at the
wildlife center.
