Chella’s Story
Chella is a 20-year-old silverback
and was a victim of the illicit
wildlife meat industry. When
he was an infant gorilla living
in Cameroon, hunters killed his
mother for meat and took little
Chella, presumably to sell as an
illegal pet.
Law authorities discovered Chella and confiscated
him. He then spent three weeks at a wildlife
office where, because the staff didn’t know how
to take care of a gorilla, he became dehydrated,
extremely malnourished, and depressed.
Chella’s life turned around when he was brought
to Limbe Wildlife Centre. The staff gave him
around the clock care until he was healthy and
ready to join a social group of other infant gorillas.
Today, he is an excellent leader and is quick to
protect other gorillas from any situation he sees
as potentially dangerous – even a cobra!
