Easy Steps for Trimming Nails
While a new baby’s nails are soft and flexible,
they can be incredibly sharp if left ragged or too
long. And because babies can’t yet control their
movements, they are likely to scratch themselves.
A newborn’s nails grow rapidly, and will need to
be trimmed often. Here are some ways to make
the task easier:
• Use a special “baby” nail file or emery board
to smooth the nails and rough edges.
• Trim nails after a bath, when the nails are
soft, or while your baby is asleep. If you do it
while your baby is awake, have someone else
hold your baby.
• Round fingernails at the corners to prevent
sharp edges. File toenails straight across.
• Avoid biting off your baby’s nails which could
introduce germs into any small cut.
