Admissions Day Holiday School and child care are closed in observance of California Admissions Day on Thursday, September 5. Child Care and CREST- Edison has many wonderful afterschool and child care programs. For information on child care for children in grades K-2, contact Wendy Cerrato at Child Development Services (CDS) 310 8280335, ext. 61123. For information on child care for children in grades 3-4-5, Homework Club, CREST afterschool enrichment classes or sports programs, contact Liz Barron at (310) 828-0335, ext. 61124. There is no unsupervised access to the school after dismissal, so children not enrolled in a CDS or CREST program must be picked up promptly after classes dismiss. The Edison Fall Book Fair will take place September 11-18. Please sign up outside the library to volunteer for a few hours and help out. Instrumental Music Back to School Nights are opportunities to meet the 4th and 5th grade music teachers, learn about the music program, and learn about how to borrow or rent an instrument. Parents are invited to either or these meetings: Monday. September 9, from 6:00-8:00 pm at Lincoln Middle School or on Tuesday, September 10, from 6:00-8:00 pm at John Adams Middle School. Parent Volunteer Training- Training for new parent volunteers will be held on Monday morning, September 9 at 8:30 a.m. in the Library. If you can't make that date and want to be a volunteer, contact Yoly Gutierrez at 310 828-0335, ext. 61152. A briefing on Edison's Achievement Scores and on Program Improvement will be held on Wednesday morning, September 11 at 8:30 am. in the cafeteria. If you can't make this meeting and have any questions about the letter you received on Program Improvement, please contact the principal.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL~S DESK: SETTLING IN TO A NEW SCHOOL YEAR
The first few weeks of the new school year are about getting acquainted with new classroom learning communities, teachers, routines, schedules and expectations- and settling into the rhythms of the school year. For some children, this happens rather quickly; for others it can take a little longer. We all adjust differently to new situations. Helping children build flexibility and resilience is one of the important parts of parenting and teaching young children. If your child is adjusting more slowly, hang in there and provide reassurance that soon things will feel easier. And please talk with your child's teacher so you can work together to smooth out any transitions. One of the first things we do each year is work with students to develop classroom constitutions. It's part of our observance of Constitution Day to learn about the rights and responsibilities of members of a community and thinking about what we all need to have in place in our "pursuit of happiness" and learning. It's also what we do to create collaborative learning communities where student voices are represented. The classroom constitutions vary in complexity by the age of the students, but each year the children bring forward some common themes in what they want- to feel safe and respected, to feel free to share their ideas, to have a classroom environment where learning is possible and fun, and to have the ability to attend to their personal needs (restroom and water breaks) as needed. At Back to School Night you'll be able to see those classroom constitutions posted in the classroom. Please mark your calendars for our Edison Back to School Nights. Parents of Kindergartners, First and Second Graders are invited on Wednesday evening, September 11. Fifth grade families will be selling dinner and drinks in the courtyard from 4:30-5:45 p.m. and we'll begin with a general parent meeting at 5:45 pm. in the cafeteria. Classroom presentations are held from 6:30-7:30 pm. The evening for parents of Third, Fourth and Fifth Graders will take place on Wednesday September 18th, following the same schedule as above. Please plan to arrive early to find legal parking in the neighborhood. CREST will have a table in the courtyard if you have questions about afterschool programs and the Book Fair will be open in the library. This is a night designed to help parents get to know the classroom teacher and the curricular expectations this year. If you can, it's good to leave the children at home as there is no supervision for children at school. If your children need to accompany you, please make sure you keep them with you at all times. These are large events and the school gates are open to the public and we all want our wonderful students to be safe.
