On Tuesday 12th May two members of the Nursing Studies/Social Care department Georgina Finnegan and Bernadette Gleeson flew out to Southampton to attend the University’s Higher Education Advisors day at the invitation of the faculty of Nursing.

Mr. Jim Bird Senior Admissions Officer and

Senior Nurse Tutor welcomed the staff of St. Conleth’s and renewed acquaintances as he and other members of the faculty have been visiting the College annually for the past two years. Mr. Bird informed the staff of the success of our students on their nursing courses and how he and the faculty are delighted to continue our relationship and strengthen links going forward.

This was a very interesting day where the future of third level education in England was discussed and the importance of further education as a progression route to degree level.

The conference was opened by Mary Curnock Cook OBE, Chief Executive of UCAS, who gave a comprehensive talk on the problems facing the third level sector and the need to continue to source students with a high level of education.

The afternoon session included a visit to the Nursing Faculty where the St. Conleth’s delegates were able to meet up with their former Nursing Studies Students who are now studying nursing in Southampton.

Overall this was a very beneficial visit for our staff as not only do we now have a wider knowledge of the UCAS system and the English third level sector in general we are also in a stronger position to inform our students and their parents of the excellent facilities and opportunities available at the University of Southampton. This type of knowledge is invaluable to parents and students when they are trying to make future educational decisions.

It is important to stress however that it is due to the high achievement , the hard work and determination of our students on the St. Conleth’s Nursing Studies course that this link has been developed and continues to blossom!
