On Sunday 10th May the Gaelcholáiste na Mara Parents’ Committee organised a highly successful and most enjoyable Fun Run/Walk in Avondale Forest Park, Rathrum, entitled “Gaeilge on the Run”.

This was a fun-raising event but more importantly an opportunity for the diverse school community to engage and socialise in a healthy manner and in a beautiful place.

Gaeilge on the Run

Over 250 participants, students, teachers, adults and families registered for the event and there was an air of excitement and anticipation as runners and walkers gathered prior to the start of the race.

Coiste na dTuismitheoirí members were led by Ashleigh Tobin and assisted by Bill Porter, Oide Tony, Príomhoide Máire and Príomhoide Tánaisteach Eibhlín. The group gathered at the venue early that morning to mark out the course and set up tables for registration and refreshments. Míle Buíochas to local companies “It’s Fresh”, ”Le Chef” and Martin Lynch for sponsoring refreshments and to Frankie Sports for subsidising the prizes.

The overall winner of the 5KM race was Dónal Ó' Flannobhra, a former student of the school, who is now studying Gaeilge at Maynooth University. Comhghairdeas Dónal.

It is planned to make this an annual event. Monies raised will contribute to the purchase of books (leabhair i ngaeilge) for the school library. This is to assist the Literacy strategy currently being undertaken in the school as part of the School Self-Evaluation process. Many thanks to all who supported and assisted on the day and in the planning of the event.
