GLENART COLLEGE

The Parents Plus Programme gives insights into the latest research and methods for parenting teenagers, and is delivered through the Psychology Department of the Mater Hospital under the tutelage of Dr. John McSharry.

Parents Plus led to the delivery of a Be Mindfulness Course which links with the Breathe programme. Research shows that mindfulness can help with a range of stress-related health issues. Twelve parents meet weekly to take part in the Mindfulness in Schools Programme. Tusla staff in Glenart College were trained to deliver this programme by the HSE in summer 2014.

The Home-School Liaison coordinators at Glenart College are proactively involved in the delivery of a range of courses for parents throughout the year, in partnership with other services of KWETB, and with external agencies and organisations. These courses focus on well-being for parents, and, as a direct result, on the well-being of their children.

Courses in Computers for Beginners and Project Maths are run in partnership with KWETB’s Adult Basic Education Service. Each year, parents have achieved QQI Level 3 awards in IT, and as a result have progressed to further learning. The Project Maths course is very popular too, as it enables parents to support their children with the new Junior Certificate syllabus at home.

KWETB’s Community Education Service are now delivering a Health and Fitness course for parents of children in this school, and St. John’s, Primary School from March 1st, for eight weeks. A new Parents Plus programme will start after the Easter break, focussing on parenting when separated. This is a newly developed course, which is being delivered for the first time by HSCL Coordinators who were trained to do so in 2016.
