Summer Explorations 2022 starts its 29th year at Capitol School located in historic downtown Tuscaloosa . The program began on the campus of The University of Alabama where it was known as “ Something Special ” for 20 summers . It has now grown to 10 weeks of five 2-week sessions . Parents can select morning ( 8:00-12:00 ) and afternoon classes ( 1:00-5:00 ) to create a full day of classes from 8:00 to 5:00 with morning arrival starting at 7:30 a . m . and the teacher staying until 5:30 p . m . for parent pick-up . Parents can fit classes at Capitol School around morning or afternoon plans such as swimming lessons or Bible School .
Capitol School ’ s philosophy of providing learning opportunities for your child ’ s Multiple Intelligences is evident in the many classes offered this summer . Capitol School ’ s emphasis on Science , Technology , Engineering and Mathematics is an outcome of our plan to earn school-wide elementary & secondary STEM accreditation . You ’ ll find many STEM related classes along with reading , art , Spanish , and music .
We haven ’ t forgotten the babies ! We offer DHR certified classes for young children ages 1 - 36 months . Children can enroll by the month for June , July and August as long as space is available . Limit of 5 children per class for infants and crawlers . All teachers are CPR trained with background checks .

DHR requires that all children ages 2.5 - 5 years be “ potty trained ” as no diaper changing facilities are allowed in this facility .
Elementary students can enroll in just one or all ten sessions in the grade they have just completed or the grade they will be starting in August .

Each two-week class costs $ 260 ( about $ 6.50 an hour ) or $ 520 for both a . m . and p . m . classes for a full day . Note that several classes have a $ 20 or $ 25 fee to provide handson experiences or baking / cooking ingredients for the students .
