A Wide Spectrum of Requests
Some typical calls that come to the main gate:
• Wildlife calls, such as an injured deer (Security staff work with town
wildlife staff to handle wildlife calls)
• Critters, such as a squirrel in the house or snake in the garage, which
security staff will remove if possible, or else advise the homeowner to
call a pest control expert
• Power outages, which they route to the utility company
• Noisy parties nearby, handled by security staff
• Strange noises in the house, which security investigates
• Trees down in the road, which are routed to the KICA
Maintenance Department during their working hours, or the
fire department after hours
• Parking for special events, such as weddings, graduation parties, or
real estate functions
• Traffic control for contractors who have needs such as paving a
driveway
• Rescues from the sand bar at the east end of the Ocean Course.
Second Shift Relief Supervisor Darryl Smalls explained: “People walk
across the sandbar when the tide is low and then they get trapped.
We coordinate with the Beach Patrol, the Coast Guard or the local
fire department to rescue them. Sometimes they can be helped back
across, but we have had to get the Marine Patrol to boat them back.”
• Deliveries of inter-office mail among the various Kiawah entities
• House checks for members who are away. “We average 22 house checks
a day,” Joe said. “We go by and make sure the doors and windows are
closed, or report damage from a storm.” Members can give security
the name and contact information for a property manager or person
with the key to their house, and security will contact that person if
they notice a problem.
