Bobcats are a unique species and play a vital role in the local ecosystem !
Did you know bobcats are about twice the size of a house cat and can be found throughout Kiawah , Seabrook , and Johns Islands ? They are elusive creatures and are most commonly seen at dusk and dawn . They are not a threat to humans , but they do help manage local rat , mouse , and deer populations .
Through Bobcat GPS Research we learned that the bobcat population on Kiawah Island declined dramatically between 2017 and 2020 due to the use of second-generation anticoagulant ( SGA ) rodenticides . The Town of Kiawah Island started the Bobcat Guardian Program to help reverse this decline and we have seen some success . The program encourages residents , businesses , and pest control providers to pledge to stop using SGAs on their property .
