FROM THE COMMISH

BUILDING ON SENATE BILL 37 written by Commissioner Vicki Schmidt , Kansas Insurance Dept .

In June , the Kansas Insurance Department finished transferring all company licensing data and processing information to State Based Systems ( SBS ). It builds upon the implementation of Senate Bill ( SB ) 37 , which overhauled producer licensing . I want to take a moment to highlight how we are expanding upon those reforms .
SB 37 was passed by the Kansas Legislature in 2021 . The bill updated many aspects of the statutes governing the licensing of insurance producers and business entities ( agencies ) in Kansas .
The legislation also changed the continuing education ( CE ) requirements for producers , now requiring 18 hours for all producers . As a result , the Department has stepped up its efforts to provide free CE courses to producers to help them meet the new benchmark . Since 2021 , we have provided over 850 hours of free CE to date , for a total savings to producers of approximately $ 17,000 . The Department will continue to provide many more opportunities for free CE . If your organization is interested in helping develop CE presentations from the Department or would like to recommend topics , please email Kyle Strathman , our Public Affairs Manager , at kyle . strathman @ ks . gov . provided the flexibility to lower fees for certain producer licensing fees . Since passage , we have been reviewing those rates and will announce a reduced fee schedule for calendar year 2024 later this fall . In addition , the Department plans to explore an expansion of the authority to lower fees as part of our legislative agenda for 2024 .
