FROM THE PRESIDENT

PRESIDENT ' S LETTER

THE NEXT CHAPTER FOR INDEPENDENT AGENTS written by Bryan Schmitz, KAIA President, SBS Insurance
As we look ahead to the next chapter of commercial insurance in Kansas and beyond, one thing is unmistakably clear: independent agents are not simply part of the future – they are essential to it. The commercial landscape is shifting rapidly, shaped by evolving risks, new technologies, and rising expectations from business owners. Yet amid all this change, the value of the independent agent remains as strong as ever. In fact, I believe this is a moment of tremendous opportunity for those ready to embrace it.
Commercial clients today are navigating a world that feels more complex each year. Cyber threats, supply chain disruptions, climate-related exposures, and workforce challenges are no longer abstract conversations— they’ re real pressures placed squarely on the shoulders of Kansas businesses. The need for advisors who can interpret risk, tailor coverage, and provide trusted guidance has never been greater. This is where independent agents shine. Our strength has always been our ability to blend expertise with relationship, and that combination is becoming increasingly indispensable.

“... independent agents are not simply part of

the future – they are essential to it.”

Carrier partnerships will also play a major role in defining the future. Collaboration and communication between agents and carriers will be critical. KAIA will continue advocating for strong, transparent, and mutually beneficial relationships
At the same time, technology is reshaping how we work. Automation, analytics, and digital platforms are improving efficiency and opening new doors to serve clients. These tools should never replace the role of the agent – but they can absolutely enhance it. When used thoughtfully, technology allows agents to spend more time on what matters most: advising, strategizing, and building meaningful connections with clients. The agencies that will thrive in the coming years are those that lean into innovation while staying grounded in the human touch that distinguishes our channel.
