REAL-TIME INSURANCE VERIFICATION IS ON ITS WAY TO KANSAS written by Commissioner Vicki Schmidt, Kansas Insurance Dept.
The holiday season is here, and this year, the Kansas Department of Insurance is very thankful for a new project that will reduce costs and headaches for Kansans.
Uninsured motorist rates in Kansas are estimated at eight percent, though depending on where you live that number could be much higher. During 2021 and 2022 insurers reported costs associated with uninsured motorist claims were over 50 million dollars. That is why the Department proposed SB 42 last session. The new law gives the Department the authority to set up a system for real-time verification of auto insurance, which will help lower the uninsured motorist rate in Kansas and modernize the auto insurance verification process for all Kansans.

Through the competitive bidding process, we have selected a vendor to help implement the Kansas Insurance Verification System( KSIVS). MV Solutions, Inc. has provided their system for insurance verification since 2006 and have implemented solutions in 18 states, including our neighbors Oklahoma, and Missouri. They are connected to over 1,000 insurers who report to their systems, and they verify more than 90 million vehicles annually.
IMPLEMENTATION IS UNDERWAY
Implementation has begun, and we have already started testing the KSIVS and onboarding insurance companies. We expect to have all insurance companies onboarded by the end of the year so we can begin working with our state partners to finalize the real-time verification component, which is planned to be up and running by July 1, 2026.
