PRESIDENT ' S LETTER
NAVIGATING A SHIFTING LANDSCAPE: THE STATE OF PERSONAL LINES written by Bryan Schmitz, KAIA President, SBS Insurance
As we find ourselves midway through 2025, it’ s clear that the personal lines side of our industry is experiencing one of the most dynamic periods in recent memory. For independent agents, this moment presents both significant challenges and an undeniable opportunity to reaffirm the value we bring to our clients and communities.
The hard market conditions continue to place pressure on personal lines, especially in home and auto. Carriers are tightening underwriting guidelines, premiums are rising, and some companies are pulling out of historically stable markets altogether. Homeowners are seeing double-digit rate increases due to inflationary rebuilding costs, increased catastrophe exposure, and reinsurance pressures. Auto insurers face rising claims severity driven by expensive parts, labor shortages, and higher medical costs.
These issues are not unique to Kansas, but our state’ s agents are feeling the squeeze in a uniquely local way. Rural and urban communities alike are grappling with affordability and access, and it’ s our job to help clients understand what’ s driving these changes – and how we can help them navigate the storm.

ever.”
