A YEAR OF EXTREMES by Dave Hulcher, KAIA
NOAA data is finally out for 2024 storm events and it was a year of increased severe storm activity. While the frequency of all storm events was in line with historical averages, severe storm events were near alltime highs not only in Kansas but the United States as well. What follows are some highlights of our 2025 Kansas Storm Events Summary that was recently released. The goal is to provide background on how weather events are driving marketplace trends and assist agents in having deeper conversations with consumers on the importance insurance products play in managing weather related risk.
ANOTHER YEAR OF HIGH ACTIVITY FROM CONVECTIVE STORMS
In Kansas, convective storm activity increased in 2024, marking the most active year since 2011. Kansas experienced a record number of thunderstorm wind events, with over 1,000 reported incidents, the highest in 25 years- driven largely by a continued increase in straight-line wind events, which reached extreme levels in the state.
