COVERED we were married , she fessed up that she really hated the game . I may also like to do some political volunteer work . We ’ ll see , but I have a good friend that gave me some advice . You should take some time , about six months , to really decide what you want to do in retirement . I have either worked or gone to school since I started college and never took off more than two weeks , so this will definitely be a new experience .
Dave : Give me your favorite Larry Magill story .
Will : There are countless Magill stories , like when he used a blowtorch to burn the paint off the wall and set his house on fire . Or the time Larry and a friend decided to cut down a tree , and after determining the direction they wanted to fall , it went the complete opposite direction falling within inches of destroying his and his neighbor ’ s garage . My favorite was playing golf with Larry one Sunday afternoon . We ’ re walking up the fairway on the first hole , and he tells me his wife , Carrie , was really , really mad at him . I said , “ What did you do now ?”. Larry came from a big family with five children , and he had forgotten to tell Carrie , until that morning , he had invited them all over for dinner that evening . Keep in mind it was 2 p . m ., I asked how many holes he was planning to play ? He said he was 18 . So , I looked at him and said , “ You invited your whole family over without telling Carrie until this morning , and it ’ s 2 p . m ., and you ’ re planning to play 18 holes with me .” And he just looked at me and said , “ Well , I told you she as mad as $@#! at me ????”. The thing about Larry is there was nothing he felt he COULDN ’ T DO , but unfortunately , he also felt there was nothing he SHOULDN ’ T DO . He was quite a guy , and we all miss him .
Dave : Your lovely wife , Denise , teaches dance exercise classes . Will you be participating in her classes in retirement ?
Will : I never have and will never . Denise and I have been married for 52 years . When I was growing up , I was determined to marry a blonde , and Denise was determined to marry a good dancer . As it turned out , she married the blonde , and I married the good dancer . It just shows you never know what life is going to bring . All kidding aside , I look forward to spending more time with her in retirement .
It has been an honor and privilege to work with Will for the past four and a half years . I have seen firsthand the impact he has had on the Kansas insurance industry and on our members . He has been a great attorney , a loyal colleague , and a wonderful friend . On behalf of our members and KAIA staff , thank you for all you have done .
As KAIA moves forward , all legal and regulatory inquiries should be directed to Beth Smoller . She has been working very closely with Will over the past year and a half in preparation for becoming KAIA ’ s primary resource for these types of inquiries . Beth ’ s industry experience , familiarity with agency operations , ability to problem-solve and legal degree equip her well for serving our members . We are also fortunate that Will has agreed to remain available to Beth in a more limited capacity should we need his experience .
