Kansas Builders Insurance Group( KBIG)

Serving the Construction Industry for over 25 years
Tell us a little about the KBIG Mission and Company History
“ We exist solely for the benefit of our members.” explains Doug Hamilton, Administrator of Kansas Builders Insurance Group.“ Without our members, we are nothing. We came into existence for them and we function only for their benefit.”
Kansas Builders Insurance Group, formerly the Kansas Building Industry Workers Compensation Fund, is a group funded pool celebrating its 25th year of operation. In 1993, when some insurance carriers were exiting the state of Kansas or were no longer willing to write workers compensation for the construction industry, KBIG was formed out of the need for accessible and affordable workers compensation for Kansas builders. Janet Stubbs, the first Administrator for KBIG, joined forces with the Kansas Building Industry Association( KBIA) and a group of 17 builders, and through their hard work and passion, the Fund began on February 1st, 1993. In the early years, most of the critical service components were outsourced, however over time, all the pieces were brought in-house, including Underwriting & Member Services, the Claims Department, Legal Services and Loss Control & Safety Services. One by one, each piece was integrated into what is KBIG’ s current operation.
From the very beginning, the primary goal has been to be a benefit to its members and to operate the organization in an effective and efficient manner. This management philosophy of efficiency has allowed KBIG to deliver on its mission to return all unused premiums back to its members, and since its inception, over 7 million dollars have been returned.
How important is the KBIG partnership with independent agents?
Although the organization was built for its members, it certainly could not exist without the critical role of the independent agent. KBIG has always relied upon the outstanding network of independent agents to sell its coverage. Agents have come to depend on the experience, knowledge, and service that KBIG provides directly to their clients.
What are some of your future areas of focus?
EASE OF DOING BUSINESS: During this 25th year of operation, KBIG has recommitted to meeting the needs of their business partners by evaluating every phase of their business.
According to Hamilton,“ Although we continually evaluate ourselves, we are excited to take a fresh look at every facet of our business and critique the benefit we provide to our insureds, our agents and even our vendors.”
SAFETY, TRAINING, AND EDUCATION: In the world of workers compensation, the role and the importance of safety and loss control simply cannot be overstated.“ Providing resources to our members will help them reduce accidents which is a benefit to our group as a whole,” Hamilton explains.“ We take safety, education and training very seriously, so our number one goal is to prevent injuries. We offer unlimited safety services and training to our members. We also understand the importance of keeping the employees on the job, so we offer multiple training opportunities. Training can be delivered on site, online or in classroom settings.”

CLAIMS: When the goal is to provide superior service, at no better time is this tested than when a claim has been submitted. KBIG takes great pride in their claims department, and states they have an obligation to their members and to their employees to thoroughly evaluate each claim as soon as it is reported.
“ Our claims department has continued to expand our services and our diligence toward successfully resolving each claim is one of the best benefits a company like ours can offer,” Hamilton shares.
COMMUNITY MATTERS:“ We are thrilled to be partnering with Habitat for Humanity! Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope to those in need and we are excited that our KBIG team can volunteer and support this fantastic organization! We can think of no better way to show our support of the building community than to be right there with them – shoulder to shoulder – working to better our community,” Hamilton says.
The past 25 years have shown incredible growth for this organization, and the future of KBIG in Kansas looks brighter than ever!
