One way many agents solve some of the issues with additional insureds is to write the( CG 20 33 04 13) which is the automatic additional insured for owners, lessees or contractors.( Commonly called blanket additional insured endorsement) While this form is a great way to eliminate the need to add this endorsement each time your contractor has requests, it does have some pitfalls. For instance, this only applies if the additional insured is required by written contract. So, if there is no written contract requiring additional insured coverage there won’ t be any coverage. Many times, contractors work off of a handshake with no written contract and this could be a large problem if your insured assumes the company he is going to work for will automatically be an additional insured because he knows he has the automatic endorsement.
Another problem with the automatic( blanket) endorsement is there is no such automatic endorsement for the completed operations. So currently even if you have the automatic endorsement for additional insureds you will still need to add a separate endorsement for each additional insured requesting completed operations. NOW for some good news! The need to have an automatic( Blanket) completed operations form was presented to ISO
at the Mid-America Insurance Conference in 2013. We were notified in 2017 that ISO has approved the development of this automatic endorsement and it will be part of a future multistate filing. So, hopefully in the very near future, agents will have this new endorsement as another tool to use to help their insureds with their additional insured requirements!
Insurance Coverage Committee
The“ INSURANCE COVERAGE COMMITTEE” formally the consumer technical affairs, is here to help members with coverage problems, ideas for improvement in policy or endorsement forms, and other technical questions. This committee is also an integral part of the Mid-America Insurance Conference. At the conference we meet with representatives of ISO and NCCI to discuss what is going on in the insurance coverage world and how we can make it better.
