is being renewed by a group affiliated insurer. Notice could be satisfied by the delivery of the new policy to the insured. The KAIA testified to ensure that the bill include notice be made to the agent of record. The bill also amends provisions in the Insurance Code pertaining to the procedure for payment of proceeds of certain insurance policies by cities and counties. EPO Insurance Product The Governor approved a bill that permits health carriers to offer an insurance product that requires some or all of the health care services to be rendered by participating providers, but requires emergency services to be covered even if not delivered by a participating provider, commonly referred to as an exclusive provider organization (EPO) product. The bill takes effect upon publication in the Kansas Register. WHAT’S AHEAD Special Session? – The Kansas Supreme Court ruled that the legislature was not equitably funding K-12 schools and ordered them to appropriately alter funding or the Court would order schools closed on July 1, 2016. The legislature made adjustments this Session to the block grant funding in an attempt to address the Court’s concerns. The Court heard oral arguments in May and will likely render a decision in June. If the Court deems the changes to address equity weren’t adequate, the legislature will likely need to return for a Special Session. Elections – All 165 Kansas legislative seats are up for election this year. The field of candidates will shape up after the June 1st filing deadline and following the August 2nd Primary Election. The KAIA staff and Government Affairs Committee will begin collecting information on candidates. But, we encourage you to visit with candidates and tell them what is important to you as an insurance agent/broker and small business owner.
