the delegation could tour. Taylor called upon Elvin and
Bernadine Domann, who produce corn and soybeans as
part of their 2,000-acre operation, to host the group.
The visitors said the most significant difference is the
scale of operations in Kansas. A farmer from Paris
said the Domanns’ farm would be remarkably large by
French standards. Janse Van Rensburg, who works for
an insurance company in South Africa, was struck by the
scale of the land and the size of the vehicles.
“Everything is bigger,” said Van Renburg. “But the
climate and stuff is about the same.”
Rainer Langner, CEO of a German crop insurance
company, said the main difference is that the U.S.
crop insurance system puts more emphasis on risk
management. In Germany and other European Union
countries, the emphasis tilts toward direct payments to
farmers, he said.
“The best crop insurance you can get is here in the
U.S.,” he said. “We’re looking whether it’s possible to
introduce these programs in Europe.”
