In the shadow of Burj Khalifa, an 830m-tall tower, which dominates the skyscraper-filled skyline of Dubai, a young peruvian photographer takes a break in the shade and sits at the edge of Dubai Fountain. How he came to be here we will see, but I wonder what was he thinking at that moment. This young man who was so far from home and had been dropped into a culture that was alien to him.
It is not often that the son fulfills the dreams of the father, or that the father instills in the son a subconscious passion for an artform, but it does occur. The eloquence of coincidence can be surprising and the consequence of an innocent gesture can unknowingly become life changing! A young boy’s developing teen years are known to be a time of rebellion and defiance, but also, if nurtured, can be a time of revelation as well!
At the age of 13 Alex received as a gift from his father: a Polaroid instant camera. These technological innovations of photography allowed the user instant satisfaction by offering the ability to view one's photos only minutes after taking them. You could watch them develop before your very eyes! This was a special gift from a man who had sacrificed his own dreams and love of this craft for family, but because he still held in his heart a passion for this art form, felt a need to share that with his son. The spark was lit, but at this time neither son not father knew it. Alex had no inclination towards photography. A couple of years later he would obtain one of the early digital cameras of the day and through the lens of this machine would explore the world in macro! He had begun to develop a passion for the very small and to record his discoveries in pictures!
