Today’s smart phone cameras have become amazingly sophisticated, and robust! They are capable of taking images of high resolution and come with built in editors that that would have been the envy of any darkroom of the pre-Nineteen-Nineties. The built in versatility of the Smart Phone camera puts the capability to take Fine Art images into the hands of any creatively minded individual. In this series of articles, Khipuz will explore some of the possibilities of using the Smart Phone as an Art Tool, and delve into the strengths and weaknesses of the Phone as Camera!

BEFORE

Many Smart Phones now can take HD Resolution images of up to 10MegaPixels or even more (There is a16 MP camera on the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus) which now allows users to blow up images to poster size without too much loss of resolution, and they are very simple to use. Touch the screen, or with voice automation, just say, ”cheese”! They also come with a suite of special effects, cropping tools and more built right into the editor. Unless you are purist, and think good photography can only be achieved with a huge camera that weighs in the kilograms and has a lens as long as your arm, then you could be amazed at the results these little beasts offer. Yes, there are some short comings such as low resolution with night and limited light shots but in this series we will explore options to resolve these issues, and creative ways to make these things work for you.

AFTER

Another issue that has been addressed by phone manufacturers has been the fact that most images taken with a phone are hand held. The newer models come with OIS (optical image stabilization) which eliminates shake, a cause of image blur.
