ICE-BREAKER Positive feedback Preparation: None Activity Stand in a circle facing the back of the person on your right. Put your right hand on the shoulder of the person in front of you. Go around the group 3 times with each person saying something they like about the person in front of them. Then turn around and repeat the exercise. SOCIO-ECONOMIC SURVIVAL - Find out from the group what their expectations are for the session. - Discuss these expectations and look for common themes in what the group's needs are for the session. - Discuss among the group what everyone's sources of income are, and if this is enough to meet their needs and the needs of their family. - Discuss the challenges they face in their family in terms of money. - Find out from the group if they think it is an extra burden to be a woman in terms of making money and putting food on the table, but still having to be a mother and a wife? How does culture and tradition influence the problem? - Discuss debt and financial planning with the group. How can one prevent getting into debt, and if one is already in debt, what - What do they do to make extra money? Does this work? What creative ideas to they have for a bigger income? How could one can do to save money to pay it off. Discuss the importance of proper financial planning. they work together as a group to improve their situation? Allow this discussion to be led by the ideas of the group. If they have difficulty with coming up with ideas, help the process along and facilitate the conversation. This session is aimed at motivating the group to take control over their financial difficulties, and giving them hope for the future. GOAL SETTING - Ask the group to draw another life-map focusing on their dreams for the future. Include short-term goals (children, own medical care) and long-term goals. - Go round the group and let everyone explain their maps. In the discussion try to compare the two life-maps and focus on the differences and hopes. Facilitate the conversation on specifically short-term goals and dreams for the future and how to set up a plan to reach those dreams. Short-term goals: Raising of children, medical care and looking after their health, dealing with HIV in the family, starting an incomegeneration activity or getting a job to support oneself and the family. Long-term goals: Write a will; make funeral plans; arrangements for the children to be looked after when ill and dying; and what dreams do you have for your children?
