SESSION 8:
HIV IN THE HOUSEHOLD, HUMAN RIGHTS
AND STIGMA (COMMUNICATION AND SUPPORT)
OBJECTIVES
The following objectives are set for Session 8:
At the end of the session the women should
-
have considered difficult situations in their relationships at home;
-
have a better understanding of risk situations;
-
understand the importance of disclosure to their loved ones;
-
have discussed the impact of stigma on their lives;
-
have an awareness of their human rights and situations of abuse of human rights
they may experience; and
-
be better equipped to deal with stigma-related behaviour and violations of human
rights.
PREPARATION
Prepare for the discussion. It is important that you take yourself mentally through the
process of the type of questions that can be raised and reflect on how to facilitate the
group, so that the core concepts can be addressed. Stigma has a big impact on everyone
living with HIV, and all members will have been affected by stigma in some way. Allow
the group to share their experiences.
