Possible comments will include the following: - Condoms are uncomfortable for both partners - It's embarrassing to be seen getting condoms - Condoms ruin the mood - Suggesting using condoms communicates mistrust - Condoms interrupt foreplay - Condoms just remind a person about HIV Possible reasons for not using condoms: - People are not honest about HIV status - Cannot obtain condoms - Substance use - Do not feel like it - Believe others do not have HIV - Lack of confidence to introduce condom use ROLE PLAY Ask for two members of the group to volunteer to do a role play of how to convince their partner to use a condom. CONDOM DEMONSTRATION Find out from the group how many members know how to put on a condom. Discuss what they know. Ask if any of the members would like to do a demonstration. Be sure to watch that the member demonstrates the process correctly. If none of the members volunteer, then one of the facilitators must do the demonstration. - Removing air from the reservoir tip - Rolling the condom all the way down - Using a water-based lubricant - Using the condom from start to finish DISCUSSION Condom anxiety and condom distaste: Acknowledge that many people with HIV develop feelings against condoms because they can symbolise Aids and death. Negative images of condoms can be directly addressed through desensitisation techniques incorporated with methods of eroticising condom use. Group can discuss how condoms can be easier if eroticised by being made fun and sexy to use. GENDER ROLES AND POWER IN RELATIONSHIPS - Find out from the group how women in their community are treated differently from men. Are there different rules for men and women? How do they deal with this? - What are the rights of women? What are the cultural and relationship-related consequences of saying no to sex with partners? What are the expectations that partners have? What happens when women don't fulfil these expectations? What happens when partners turn violent? - How can women combat these gender inequalities? - Discuss with the group how they can deal with the difficult situations in their relationships?
