SESSION 2: LIVING POSITIVELY. 'HOW DO I LOOK AFTER MYSELF?' BASIC HIV/Aids INFORMATION OBJECTIVES The following objectives are set for Session 2: At the end of the session the women should be able to understand the difference between HIV and Aids; understand how HIV affects the human body; know what it means to live positively with HIV; understand the role of antiretroviral treatment (ART) and monitoring of health status; and understand the risk of transmission to an infant and how to decrease the risk of transmission. PREPARATION Prepare for the discussion. It is important that you take yourself mentally through the process of the type of questions that can be raised, and reflect on how to facilitate the group so that the core concepts can be addressed. It is important that the facilitator has a good understanding of the discussion topics, but must not feel pressured to answer any questions he or she is unsure about. If you are not sure about something, note it down and talk with your mentor, so that you will be able to give the group accurate feedback the following week. MATERIALS The following will be needed for this session: - Paper and pen to take the register and for notes on the session - Whiteboard and marker for questions - Handouts on basic knowledge of HIV and Aids (from clinics) - Material on how to live positively (from clinics) - Material on antiretroviral treatment (from clinics) CORE CONCEPTS The following are core concepts that should be addressed during this session: - HIV - Aids - Transmission of the virus - Symptoms of HIV and Aids - CD4+ count - Antiretroviral treatment (ART) - Living positively - Nutrition - Re-infection - Prevention OUTLINE OF THE SESSION - Welcome the group, and make apologies for absent members. - Open the group session according to the group norms set, for example did the group decide to open with a prayer?
