OUTLINE OF THE SESSION SEPARATE GROUPS (60 MINUTES) Mother Group - Welcome. - Acknowledge the group, welcoming and apologies. - Open the group session according to the group norms set, for example, did the group decide to open with a prayer. Before commencing with the group session, briefly discuss the previous session. - Get feedback from the group on anything that they feel they want to share with the group. Ask about any highlights or negative experiences. - Meeting with the group of mothers to introduce the memory-box concept and to discuss how best to preserve the memory boxes in their families. Aim: By the end of this session, the mothers should have a basic understanding of the psychosocial needs of the children. In brief, they should know who can benefit from making memory boxes, why memory boxes are important to make and how to make a memory box. - Ask the mothers to brainstorm the needs of children and invite them to classify the needs according to categories. - Write the different categories on a flip-chart paper and leave enough space between the categories to fill it up during the discussion time. The different categories are physical needs, emotional needs, social needs, cognitive needs and spiritual needs. Physical needs: Food, clothing, shelter, health care, hygiene, etc. Emotional needs: Children need to be loved, to love, to accept and be accepted, encouragement, self-confidence, positive self-esteem, trust, etc. Social needs: Humans are social beings. They need to feel that they belong and are able to identify with others and have adequate communication skills. Appropriate behaviour is learnt in social situations etc. Cognitive needs: Formal education, informal education through observing others and general skills, for instance, life skills and general knowledge. Spiritual needs: Through belief, a child could develop a sense of hope. Practising faith in difficult times could help the child to cope better. It gives a sense of purpose and to look beyond the immediate difficult situation. - Ask the mothers to identify the needs of children according to age groups. The following age groups can be pre-written on the flip chart. * Infants and toddlers: 0-2 years * Pre-school children: 2-6 years * Young children: 6-10 years * Pre-adolescents: 9-12 years * Adolescents: 13-18 years - Place this flip chart next to the identified-needs flip chart and ask the mothers in which age groups they would place each - Ask the mothers why it is important to meet the needs of their children. identified need.
