ACTIVITY 1 - HOW TO MAKE MY OWN SOUP (DEMONSTRATION) How to make my own soup Aim: To provide a sense of efficacy (usefulness), social skills, survival skills, and safety rules Time: 60 to 90 minutes for preparation Materials needed: - Ingredients for vegetable soup (depending on availability: carrots, onions, tomatoes, soup packets, pasta, marrow bones, beans, celery, potatoes, tin of vegetables, water, salt) - Grater - Peelers - Pot for soup - Hotplate - Refuse bags for aprons - Flowers and pot for table - Serviettes Instructions: Heat up water beforehand. Bear in mind the limited time available to prepare the soup. Have most of the vegetables pre-prepared (diced or grated) and pre-heat the hotplate. Also heat up pasta to throw into the soup mix (could be alternated by barley or beans). Demonstrate in detail to the children how to make vegetable soup. Demonstrate safety rules for working with hot water and using a knife. First cook the water and then throw in the marrowbones and salt. Give every child the opportunity to peel a vegetable and to grate the vegetables into the soup. Then give them the other pre-prepared vegetables also to throw into the soup. Describe every step very carefully and ask questions to make sure the children know the steps for making soup. Add the soup packets and a tin of vegetables. Stir the soup and bear in mind the safety risks involved when working on an unsteady hotplate and a hot substance. Explain this hazard to the children. Give the children the opportunity to smear the bread slices with margarine and to set the table with flowers and serviettes for them and their mothers. We have a break halfway through the session, during which the children can go to the bathroom. Continue with activity 2 and don't forget to check up on the soup on the hotplate/stove. ACTIVITY 2 - HOW TO GROW SEED (POTATO HEAD - MAN OR WOMAN) How to grow seed Aim: To experience growth to identify how to live healthily, safety rules, sense of accomplishment. Time: 3 ֖
