Aim: Team building, to understand the importance of helping
others, to understand the importance of own role, to make
decisions and problem-solving
Time: +- 20 min.
Materials needed: Worksheet
Activity
Read the following to the group:
are on a ship and that your ship is packed with tinned food.
But a storm throws you onto a rock and you have about 15
minutes before your ship is going to sink.
Nearby is a small island you can swim to (note to facilitator:
explain island if the concept is not understood). Each of you
can take along one bag of tinned food, and the whole group
can take 5 items to the island - only 5 items no matter what
their size!
Note to the facilitator: Give the worksheet to every group
member.First decide what item you would choose and why
you would choose it. Decide in the group which of the items
(remember you can take only 5) is going to help you the most
on the island.
Note to the facilitator: Give time to discuss the decision. Let the group interact and give their input.
Remember the ship is sinking fast.
Well done, you have reached the island and have brought along plenty of food and 5 items (name the ones the group chose).
Now let me ask you some questions:
How are you going to open the tins?
How are you going to cook your food?
How are you planning to get water?
How are you going to defend yourself against wild animals?
How will you protect yourselves from rain, cold weather and thunder?
If you see another boat, how are you going to let them know where you are?
If all your food is finished, what will you do?
Do you think you chose the right items to take with you to the island?
