ACTIVITY 1 - METAPHORICAL STORY The Lion, Hyena and Tortoise LION had caught a large kudu which lay dead on the top of a high river bank. Lion was thirsty and wanted to go and drink water. Lion asked Hyena, "Please look after my lunch, I am very thirsty and need to drink some water. The sun is very hot today, and hunting the kudu used up all my energy. I will share my catch with you when I get back, but please wait until I am back so that we can eat as friends together." "Very well, my friend", said Hyena and Hyena was secretly smiling as he now thought he had won the lottery. While Lion went to the river, Hyena thought of an evil plan to have the entire kudu for himself. He struggled to remove a large rock on which Lion had to step onto to reach the river bank when he comes back. Without this rock in place, Lion would not be able to reach the high river bank. After that Hyena greedily ate parts of the kudu. You could only hear him laughing in the distance. Between big gulps of food, he said to himself, "What a fool lion was to trust me. I am so clever to outsmart Lion". When he was full, he even invited the vulture to eat some of the leftovers of the carcass. He bragged and told the vulture that he caught the kudu by himself. After Lion had enough to drink and rested a little under the shade of a thorn tree, he tried to climb up the bank. Lion tried and tried, but he just could not get on the bank. He saw the rock he used earlier to climb down was not there anymore. "Hyena, please help me," he shouted. "I am in desperate need of your help my friend". "Yes, Lion, I will let down a rope and then you can climb up." Hyena whispered to the vulture, "Give me one of the old, thin ropes. That lion is trying to steal our food and I am going to teach him a lesson". And then he added aloud, "Vulture, give me one of the strong ropes, so friend Lion won't fall." The vulture gave him an old thin rope. Hyena and Vulture first ate some more of the meat, then gradually let the rope down. Lion caught it and struggled up. When he neared the top of the bank, Hyena gave the rope a quick pull. It broke and down HIV Intervention Programme for the ENHANCEMENT OF CHILDREN'S RESILIENCE 125
