ACTIVITY 1 - BODY MAPPING Aim: Setting body boundaries; to distinguish between self and others; to describe self and getting to know one's strengths Time: 30 minutes Materials needed: Large piece of paper for each child, Kokis and crayons Instructions: - Hand out a large piece of paper and crayons to each member in the group. The whole body of the child must be able to fit onto the paper. Wrapping paper can be used. - Pair off the group members and give every pair a Koki. - Explain to the group what a body map is. You could say the following: "We are going to take this paper and tell the story of how your whole body looks. It is going to be like a big photo you made of your whole self and your home". - Lay the paper on the ground and let the children take turns to outline each other on the piece of paper. Space can be left above the child's head and under the feet to add other information. Attention facilitator.: Some children may not feel comfortable with this exercise. If a child seems uncomfortable, you must try an alternative method. Put the paper up against the wall and only mark the child's height on the paper. Ask the child then to draw himself or herself as he or she sees himself or herself. - After the children have outlined themselves, ask them to write their names on top of the paper (help those learners who cannot write). - Ask the children to finish their drawings (include mouth, eyes, nose, ears, hair, etc.). - Let the children compare their drawing's height, foot size, hand size, etc. - Give every child a chance to introduce his or her drawing to the group and to tell the group his or her likes and dislikes. - Ask the group to give their body maps to you for safe keeping. Explain the reason for this: they are going to work with their body maps in a later session. Their body maps will then be given to them to take home and to show them to their family. Discussion Discuss the following questions in the group while referring back to the body map each child has drawn: - How is your body map different from the rest of the group? - How is your body map the same as the rest of the group? - What do you like most of yourself? - Encourage the child to express his or her feelings, experiences, thoughts, attitudes, actions, values and reactions. We have a break halfway through the session, during which the children can go to the bathroom. 96 Children The KGOLO-MMOGO PROJECT
