THE EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE OF HAVING
HIV: 'HOW DO I FEEL?' (PART 1)
OBJECTIVES
The following objectives are set for Session 5:
At the end of the session the women should
-
have all made a life map;
-
have shared personal stories with the group;
-
have identified emotional responses and coping mechanisms used in difficult or
stressful times; and
-
have experienced dealing with their emotions through externalisation.
PREPARATION
Prepare for the discussion. It is important that you take yourself mentally through the
process of the type of questions that can be raised and reflect on how to facilitate the group,
so that the core concepts can be addressed. This session may bring up many emotions in
the group, and the facilitator should be prepared to deal with the sensitivity of the discussion.
Prepare your own life map to draw, and present it to the group. This session may take half
an hour longer than the usual one-and-a-half hours.
MATERIALS
The following will be needed for this session:

Paper and pen to take the register and for notes on the session

Ball of wool for ice-breaker

A3 papers and crayons to draw with

Whiteboard to write on, with two parts: feelings and coping

CD player

CD (relaxing music)
