ICE-BREAKER
The den
Activity
Aim: To increase awareness of feeling safe and not feeling safe. To facilitate decision-making, cohesion and trust.
Materials: Something to indicate where the safe place is; such as beanbags
Description: A run-around game in which the children have to decide whether they feel safe and strong enough to leave
their den, depending on what might be outside.
Time: 5-10 minutes
Guidelines: Make a safe place in one corner of the room, large enough to accommodate everyone. One group facilitator
can play the "angry bear" outside the den. The other group facilitator asks the questions. Play the game quickly.
You are all safe inside your safe place. Outside the den there is an angry bear. Do your come out or not?
Outside the safe place there is:
A dog
A ghost
A policeman
Your teacher
Your best friend
Your mum
Your uncle
Your dad
Do you come out or not?
It is important to give younger children permission to create their own safe places around the room and their lives.
