CATHERINE YANG 杨可欣 I have given my exhibition a title—“ Beauty without limits”. The reason why I can use these three words to conclude my artworks is I have following these intension all the way through my creating process. As a feminist, the elements of feminism always inadvertently blend in my artworks. Women’s body and features about female are the most common things I depicted in my paintings. What I want to convey, is the sense of freedom and equality. In my life before the age of twenty, I have seen and heard so many comments and criticism towards the appearance, the dressing, the behavior of women, even myself have experienced these. “ Women have to be slim, have to be curve, have to wear ‘properly’.” “ Women should be soft, should be housewife, should be her husband’s accessory.” But, should we? The feminist consciousness germinated in my mind when I gradually became a woman. I believe that we are the master of our own body, we should not limit possibilities by following to those unspoken rules in the society blindly. “Don’t let boundaries to yourself” became the only rule I followed when I creating. In my exhibition, I have explored several subtopic around my central theme. MEMORIES 2224X1668PX PAINTING MEDIUM DIGITAL PAINTING This painting reflects my profound thoughts and worries as a global citizen. Women as an embodiment of sensibility, we tend to easily have emotional ups and downs about changes in the outside world, and I believe the world become a better place because of us. This painting reveals the connection I have built when I saw a picture of warfare. A dirty boy who is grabbing a toy in the ruins, he had lost his family in the war. The crying is the grown boy, and the burnt around the black and white picture represents the grief of this memory.
