Science Year 2 Planting Project Over the Summer Term, the focus of Year 2’s Science lessons was on Growing Plants. In the first week back after the Easter break, each child chose a seed and bulb to plant. They made predictions about what plants need to germinate and grow healthily, and made suggestions about how we could test our hypotheses. They set up a number of experiments, testing whether seeds really need water, air, light and soil. Every morning, they took great pleasure in checking the planting tray to see how the seeds were progressing, with much excited chatter ensuing. They recorded the progress of the seeds in a seed diary each week, with some rather surprising results! Additionally the children looked at the inside of a seed and bulb, and discovered that plants make their own food in their leaves. They developed their scientific skills by observing carefully, producing labelled diagrams, planning and performing tests, and gathering and recording data. Additionally, they each created an eBook using an iPad, allowing them to digitally document the project as whole. They were thrilled to see their finished books at the end of term! We also have some evidence that we have unearthed some future budding gardeners and botanists! 53
