Visit to Odd ’ s Farm

It was a sunny day when the coach arrived at Odd ’ s Farm . As part of our work on Spring and learning about our senses , the children were delighted to have the opportunity to observe some baby animals and experience the sights , sounds and smells of the farmyard first hand . Vayun eagerly observed , “ I saw the farmer wash her boots before coming into the barn .” Excited boys and girls walked around the barn , mesmerised by the cacophony of animals within . They witnessed the lambs gambolling , the hens pecking in their roost and the pigs snuffling in their pens . During the informative demonstrations , the children learned all about the different varieties and breeds of animals on the farm and how they are cared for . They were invited to gently stroke the bunnies and loved touching their soft , velvety fur . Alex shared her expertise , exclaiming , “ A girl rabbit is called a Doe .” Later the children bottle fed the hungry baby goats . They had to hold on tight so the goats didn ’ t escape with the milk !
Our visit to the farm offered the perfect ingredients to inspire our learning in the classroom . Animal paintings adorned with collage helped to convey the different textures encountered when actually handling the animals . The children also used their phonic knowledge to become the authors of their own farm booklets , capturing the events of the day with beautiful illustrations . To support our numeracy and critical thinking skills , we set up a role-play farm shop where the children enjoyed engaging in imaginative play with their friends .
