Year 6

Year 6 is the pinnacle of the children’s Kew College career. It a terrific high with their Summer Play —The Jungle Book in
has been a year of examination work, trips, visits and
which they showcased their talents. We are all really proud
project work. After the fun of Bushcraft in the Autumn
of their contributions to life at Kew College.
Term, the children settled into their examination work and
produced a wonderful array of results, all gaining places at
secondary school. After February half term, they embarked
on the STRIDE initiative, a firm favourite, and set up and ran
their own mini-businesses, from hair braiding to bottle
flipping. They excelled in their ideas and produced excellent
sales results. During the Summer Term, they visited
Normandy in France, as well the Orange Tree Theatre,
Houses of Parliament and Kew Gardens. The year ended on
Bushcraft 2016
During the first week of term, Year 6 ventured into the Oxfordshire
woodlands to experience an adventure with The Bushcraft Company.
After trekking into the camp and cooking their kebabs over an open fire,
the children were divided into three tribes. When tribe names were
decided, banners were designed and imaginative stories and dances
created, before shelters were constructed out of branches, leaves and
tarpaulin. Stories around the camp fire were followed by a sleep in the
shelters that they built or in tents; a true woodland experience.
Day Two saw the children using cutting tools to make pegs as well as
learning how to make traps. Swimming in the freezing lake followed;
screams echoing through the woods indicated the initial shock of the
cold, but were instantly followed by the sounds of laughter! A 'Tribes Got
Talent' show concluded the second day. The final day involved the
children learning some basic First Aid and applying their bushcraft skills
to make their own traps. The coach journey home was filled with stories
of adventure, coupled with a strong scent of campfire smoke that
pervaded the atmosphere.
I really enjoyed sleeping in the shelters.
