Year 4 In full stride Butser Ancient Farm Year 4 explored life in the Anglo-Saxon times during our visit to Butser Ancient Farm. We learnt about cooking, weaving, fence building, farm work and daily customs. We were able to step back in time and explore an Anglo Saxon house as if we were really living and working during those times. The children then undertook a creative writing task imagining that they had suddenly awoken in the Anglo Saxon times. I awoke in an Anglo-Saxon house dazed and confused. I wasn’t back home in my warm, cosy bed! Instead I was lying on an animal skin with a blazing fire in front of me. I needed to move, to work this out. I walked through the door and looked around. I was in a village of some sort. All the houses were rectangular and there seemed to be farmland for each and every house. I saw a man coming towards me and he shouted at me in a foreign language. That’s when I realised what had happened - I had somehow been transported to the Anglo-Saxon times. We had studied this at school and I’d even seen it first hand at Butser Ancient Farm but could I survive long enough to find my way home? George 26 I awoke in an Anglo-Saxon house dazed and confused. My head ached and everything was blurry. Finally, when my eyes had cleared I saw animal skins on the floor, I smelt smoke all around me and I heard animals. In fact, I could see animals. They were sleeping in the same room as me! It hit me that I was in an Anglo Saxon house. I was so shocked, almost as if I’d seen a ghost. I headed towards the door and noticed the strange triangular shape carved on it. I had learnt about this when I had gone to Butser Ancient Farm with my class. The Anglo-Saxon’s believed House Elves could enter their houses through these triangles and they would help them finish any incomplete house work. I think all houses should have house elves. As scared as I was at being in a different time, I was quite excited as well. Bria
