Gaining independence

Excitement rose as we entered beautiful Richmond Park . The children were warmly greeted by the volunteers at the centre and led to the classroom for the introduction to the workshop to support their Victorian history studies . There was no rest to be had ! They were put to work as laundry maids and servants , grating carbolic soap and attacking the clothes with vigour using a dolly and a posser ( the tools of time gone by )! Another group was sent to work in the Victorian Pharmacy (‘ Philip Palmer ’ s Chymist ’ reconstructed from the original shop ). They busily made soap with soap flakes , oats and rosewater . Next stop was Mrs . Sawyer ’ s school room . They compared the artefacts from The
Victorian era with those we use in modern times – irons , hot water bottles and even a policeman ’ s lamp ! The children practised their writing , first on slates and then with Ink pens made from wood with a steel nib . It was not as easy as it looked – there were many inkstained fingers to prove it . Several pupils claimed their highlight was cleaning the clothes . However , the best quote from the day was , “ I loved everything !”
Traction Man
After reading the story ‘ Traction Man is Here ’ by Mini Grey , the Year 2 pupils were inspired to write short , descriptive stories about the super-hero and his adventures . They used exciting vocabulary to describe his outfit and created their own characters to throw into the mix !
Traction Man is wearing his hard , steel space suit and his titanium helmet . He is zooming around Sam and Poppy ’ s house when suddenly he hears a big scream from upstairs ! He gets in his jet-powered shoes and creeps slowly until he sees Evil Professor Hairbrush ! Barney
Traction man is wearing his red , steel helmet with a transparent visor , a strong armoured shirt and a red , shiny pair of trousers . He is rapidly flying down to Planet Coal . His friend , brave and ferocious Spoon , is helping him to defeat the dangerous , evil Professor Fire from the coalminers of Planet Coal . Noah
He is creeping through the play room jungle , trying to attack the evil trees . His friend is lost so he is all alone fighting the evil trees . Suddenly his friend , Rug , jumped out of nowhere . He lumbered worriedly towards the evil trees and threw them away . Everyone was happy because Traction Man had saved the day again . Maya
