Year 1
Finding our feet
Our Antarctic Visitor
Dressed in his Antarctic clothing, Mr Neden-Watts came to talk to the
children about his two year stay on the continent. Most impressive were
his bear paw gloves which he quickly removed, explaining they were
much too warm to wear inside. Mr Neden-Watts worked as part of a
team of 17 people based in the Halley station. His home weighed 700
tonnes and stood high on 20 legs. These had to be jacked up each year
to raise the building above the level of the snow. There were gasps of
awe as the children saw a photo of vehicles driving beneath the station.
Mr Neden-Watts had awe inspiring photographs which he used to
illustrate his talk. He kindly let the children handle these, as well as his
bear paw gloves and ice axe. Year 1 were clearly fascinated by his
account of his time in Antarctica and were particularly interested in the
animals he saw. It was a lovely opportunity for the children to gain
inspiration for their posters on Arctic animals.
